| Description | : | On April 24, 1775, John Butler, at the age of only fourteen years and two months, enlisted in the 1st Company of the 16th Massachusetts Bay (5th Middlesex County) Provincial Regiment lead by Colonel John Nixon, serving under his father, Captain Joseph Butler. Both father and son fought side by side on June 17, 1775 at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Their company was stationed on Breed's Hill behind the famous "rail fence," and was amongst the last units to retire at the end of the conflict, covering the retreat of their fellow soldiers.
