Read More	Malvern Leader   Thursday, October 20, 1932 "Jack" McCarty Died at Aurora, Nebr., October 13   Funeral in Emerson Saturday; Lived in, Near Emerson Over 40 Years John McCarty, better known to all his old friends as "Jack," for more than forty years a resident of eastern Mills county, died Thursday, Oct. 13, at the home of his son, Frank, in Aurora, Nebr. He had been in feeble health for some time but his last illness was brief. The body was brought to Emerson Saturday, Oct. 15, accompanied by the three sons and grandchildren, and funeral services held in the First Baptist church, attended by large numbers of his old neighbors and friends of Emerson and the Champion Hill neighborhood. The services were conducted by Rev. W.C. McClelland, Presbyterian pastor at Corning, and a long time friend and former pastor of the family. He had promised Mr. McCarty to do this more than thirty-five years ago. Music was furnished by a quartet, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Cheney, Mrs. W.H. Cramer, and C.D. Greenwood, with Miss Margaret Hatfield as accompanist. Burial was in the Emerson cemetery and the Masonic Lodge of Emerson had charge of these services. H.C. Hicks was in charge using the beautiful service of the order and a large number of the brethren were in attendance. Mr. McCarty had belonged to this order for more than forty years and took great delight in its teachings. The pall bearers were: J.A. Thorson, E.R. Birdsall, Forrest Snodgrass, Lyle Hixson, George Douglas, and Harvie Douglas. Mr. McCarty was for many years a familiar figure in and around Emerson and few people had more friends. He ever had a pleasant word and a genial kindly smile for all with whom he came in contact. The old farm home south of Emerson was ever one of hospitality, as many of the old neighbors will recall. After retiring from the farm he moved into Emerson where they lived for many years. The following obituary was prepared in the home of his son in Aurora and was read at the services: John McCarty, the son of Samuel and Catherine McCarty, was born May 30, 1845, at Rohrsburg, Pa. He was one of a family of four children and was the last surviving member of that family, his father, mother, and three sisters having passed on before him. He grew to maturity in Pennsylvania and before the Civil war came to its close he enlisted in the 210th Pennsylvania infantry Volunteers, Co C, and served until the end of the war. After the war he moved to Ohio and later to Illinois where he settled at Aledo. On Dec. 16, 1869 he was united in marriage to Harriet Lockhart at Preemption, Ill. To this union were born three sons, all of whom are now living. They are: Thomas Clyde and James Guy, both living at Omaha, Nebr., and Frank L. of Aurora, Nebr. He moved from Aledo to Ames, Ia., and then he took up his home at Emerson. In his old age he spent six years at Plattsmouth and four years at Omaha, and then came with his wife to Aurora two years ago. While living with his son, Frank L. McCarty, his wife died and was buried a year ago last March. His last illness was of short duration having been confined to his bed about two weeks. Mr. McCarty was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Emerson. He had belonged to the Masons some forty years. He passed away at an early hour Thursday morning of this week at the home of his son in Aurora, Nebr. He lived to the ripe old age of eighty-seven years, four months, and thirteen days.
