John and Mary (Campbell) Carpenter had six children who lived past infancy: Elizabeth Carpenter (Marshall) (Memorial #42207933), Priscilla Carpenter (Pepperman) (Memorial #42592889), Susan Ann Carpenter (Tate) (Memorial #99906636), Sophia Carpenter (Newcomer) (Memorial #123603169), Mary Ann Carpenter (Ranck) (Memorial #110256089) and, after five girls, John Jackson Carpenter. On December 22, 1846, John married Mary J. Marshall in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. They moved to Iowa in 1854. On August 13, 1862, John enlisted at Strawberry Point, Iowa, in what would be Company B of the state's 21st regiment of volunteer infantry. After brief training at Camp Franklin in Dubuque, they left for war on September 16, 1862, on board the sidewheel steamer Henry Clay and two barges lashed alongside. After transferring to the Hawkeye State, they reached St. Louis on September 20, 1862. Early service was in Missouri where, in January 1863, John contracted jaundice and was treated in quarters by assistant surgeon Lucius Benham. John was left behind when the regiment left Houston for West Plains, but caught up at Iron Mountain. In March, still not completely well, he was given a furlough to accompany a sick comrade, William Appleton, to Farley. John rejoined the regiment at Richmond, Louisiana, on April 13, 1863. During the Vicksburg Campaign, he participated in the May 1, 1863, Battle of Port Gibson, was present during the May 16, 1863, Battle of Champion Hill when the regiment was held in reserve by General McClernand, participated in the May 17, 1863 assault at the Big Black River, participated in the assault at Vicksburg on May 22, 1863, and participated in the siege that followed. Vicksburg surrendered on July 4, 1863, and John then participated with his regiment in a pursuit of Confederal General Joe Johnston and a brief siege of Jackson. They were stationed on the Gulf Coast of Texas when, on March 24, 1864, his oldest son, William M. Carpenter enlisted as a new recruit in Company B. In July, William and other recruits who still had time to serve were transferred on July 12th to a 34th/38th Iowa infantry while John was mustered out on the 15th with other original enlistees at Baton Rouge. At home, he purchased 168 acres in Clayton County. On January 31, 1881, he applied for an invalid pension citing his wartime health problems. With support from numerous comrades, the pension was granted and he was receiving $12.00 monthly, payable quarterly, when he died. Mary was left with two lots in the Sterns Addition to Franklin, Strawberry Point, that were valued by the county auditor at $1,400. She applied for a widow's pension but died before it could be acted upon. Read less
