Description	:	The following information was provided by Find a Grave member DB6654: John Jacob “Friederich” Kramer was 10 years old when his parents, Johann Heinerich and Catherina Maria (Pohlschneider) Kramer, brought their family to America in April of 1833. Little sister Anna Maria was 3. They lived near Stallostown/Minster, Ohio, where the father found work along the Miami-Erie Canal. In the summer of 1833, ASIATIC CHOLERA sickened many of the settlers. Little Anna Maria Kramer died at Stallostown, Ohio, on July 20, 1833, and was soon followed in death by her parents. A near-by farmer who had not noticed anyone around went there and found them all dead. He went back and told his wife and they returned to look for sure. They found that young “Fried” Kramer was still alive but unconscious and they took him home and cared for him. When “Fried” Kramer was 12 years old he went to work for a butcher and then a baker. He saved his money and bought a team of horses and a wagon and started farming. Then he went to work for a short time on the Erie Canal, but soon set out on his own again. On 29 April 1845 he married Mary Elizabeth Friemering at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church at Minster, Ohio. She died in 1854 soon after the birth of her 4th child. On 20 May 1856 he married Mary Elizabeth Vaske at St. Augustine Catholic Church of Minster, Ohio. About 1870 the family moved to Iowa by covered wagon and bought land near a creek so that they would have water for their stock. This land was a few miles south of New Vienna near the community of Petersburg, Iowa. “Fried” was a kind, considerate and patient man and known for his love of and care of his horses. He was a trustee on the board of an orphanage and as such was required to find a home for children when they reached the age of 12. The Kramers took one of these children, George Baker, into their home. George lived with the Kramers until he joined the Union Army during the Civil War. “Fried” and his first wife had four children, only one of whom survived to adulthood. With his second wife he had 13 more children, four of whom died of diptheria in 1880.
