Description	:	aged 29 yrs. 9ms. 3ds. Last Friday, 26 Jul 1867, John Jacob Helwick who was living on Rev. E. W. Wining's farm, two miles south of Washington, met with an accident which resulted in his death Sunday 28 1867. Wining's farm, two miles south of Washington, met with an accident which resulted in his death Sunday 28 1867. Called to dinner, he went to his team which was attached to a wagon, and unhitched, The wagon stood on an inclined plane, and of course followed the team, which got scared and fourished around briskly, In some way the off horse knocked Mr. Helwick down, and stumbled over him, Workmen hastened to the spot, and found him lying between the wagon and the prostrate horse, and bleeding at the nose. They helped him home, and no one supposed he was seriously hurt, In a short time, however, intense internal pain seared in, and he lingered in agony over thirty hours when he was released. He said he did not know how or where he was hurt, but it is thought that the knees of the horse fell upon his stomach as they slid over his body and imbedded themselves in the ground. Mr. Helwick was a most estimable young man. He served in the army three years, going out in Captain Stanton's Company C, 19th Iowa Infantry. His record as a soldier and as a citizen was among the fairest, He got married last winter, and leaves a cruelly afflicted young wife, and many friends in this county to mourn his untimely death. He was born Saturday 25 Oct 1845, in Pennsylvania, a son of Elisha and Sarah Narver Helwick, He married Julia Ann Burham on 1 Jan 1867 in Washington County, Iowa Burial will be in Roberts Chapel Cemetery, Cedar Township, Washington County, Iowa.
