He also attended the Calkins Valley school at Lochart. He found it quite different, as the children mostly wore overalls and went bare- foot in the summertime. He helped his father, cutting brush and breaking the land. He also worked on other farms. In the wintertime he worked in sawmills in Alberta and B.C. In 1924 he married Irene Greif also of the Lock- hart district. I was born in Uniontown, Wash., and came to Canada at an early age with my parents and two sisters in 1910. In 1925 with our small son John M. (Jack) we moved to the Symonds district, renting the N.W. of 28, 41-2-W5 from Mr. C. B. Lindahl, and the S.E. of 32,41,2,5 from Mrs. Mary Hall. The first years money was scarce, so, each spring in April, we obtained a permit to trap muskrats on the lake known as the Lindahl lake for a little ready cash, the pelts bringing from $1.25 to $2.95 each at that time. The first year we made around $400., which seemed a lot of money to vis. Later we purchased the two quarters of land and were engaged in mixed farming, grain, hogs, and a few chickens, for a number of years. In 1932 a daughter Maxine Evelyn was born. The N.W. of 28, was known as the Lindahl place, it had a large lake on it, and in the winter was a lovely place to skate. When Jack and Maxine were growing up, the young people from all around Sy- monds, Leedale, Lockhart, and some from Rimbey, came to skate on Sundays, and sometimes in the evenings. A few of them would come early, to clear the snow off a large spot on the ice. They had parties, cooking weiners over the open fire, and skating to music played on a small phono- graph, which the MacLean boys brought with them. They also played some hockey at times. While attending the Calkins Valley school, Jack and a class mate tried to join the Air Force but were rejected. His friend was too young, and he didn't pass the eye test. He helped with the farming, also helping the neighbors in the busy seasons. He was a welder, also made himself a sawmill, and sawed lumber for others. Later he moved to Edmonton where he worked at carpentry work. He remained single, and passed away in Edmonton in 1969. Maxine took her schooling at Symonds, and Rim- bey High. As she was eight years younger than Jack, there was one year we didn't have anyone go- ing to school. Then Maxine started the next year, There being range cattle pasturing on the road, she was afraid to go to school alone, so I took her to school for nearly a year, however she soon got over being frightened, and one day when she was about ten years old, a groundhog disputed her right of way, on a part of the road which ran through a slough with water on each side, neither her or the groundhog could get off the road, so she picked up a stick and killed it. In 1950 she married Herbert Keith of the Fuller district. They are now living in Rimbey. They have four children, Linda, Randy, David and Patricia (Patty). Linda married Raymond Babiuk, who is em- ployed by Dome Petroleum. They have two daugh- ters, Nichola and Leslee. Randy works for Kin-Brook Completions, and lives in Brooks, Alta. David works with Columbia Oil, and is presently making his home in Red Deer, Alta. Patricia took a business course at Reeves Business College in Red Deer, Alta. and is now working in Red Deer. In 1934 John was elected to the Symonds school board, and served as school trustee for five years, I was Sec.-Treas. for the same period of time. In 1965 due to ill health, John was forced to give up farming, and we moved to Rimbey, selling the farm to John Grutterink. John passed away in 1966.
