John “Johnny” Salzer, Jr., son of John and Christina (Gohl) Salzer, r. was born June 29, 1931 near Danzig, ND. He grew up and attended school in Ashley. In 1951, Johnny entered the United States Navy, serving in the Korean War Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1955 and returned to Ashley. He then began working in the plumbing business. Johnny was united in marriage to Phylis Iszler on June 23, 1957 in Grace Lutheran Church in Lehr, ND. He worked in the McIntosh County area for almost 25 years in the plumbing and excavation business. In 1978, Johnny and Phyllis purchased and operated the JP Lounge in Ashley for 13 years. During those years, Johnny continued to do small plumbing jobs around Ashley. Johnny loved to spend time collecting rocks, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family. He spent a lot of time during retirement at the family lake cabin at Lake Hoskins. Johnny and Phyllis also loved to travel and made sure they made time for that. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Frank Piper American Legion Post #53. Johnny also served as a McIntosh County Commissioner from 1977-1980. Grateful for having shared Johnny’s life are his wife of 60 years, Phyllis; three sons, Scott (Dorice) Salzer and Todd (Deborah) Salzer, both of Dickinson, ND and Mark Salzer of Aberdeen; brother, Clarence Salzer of Bismarck, ND; sisters, LuElla Blumhardt of Venturia, ND and Irene Novotny of Roseville, MN; two grandchildren, Jackie (Cory) Randle and Courtney (Brook) Maier; four great-grandchildren, Max, Gus, Afton and Ellis and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Johnny in death were his parents, two brothers, Ray and Eugene and one sister, LaVina Huber. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
