Richards Dies at the Age of 63 A most familiar figure in town and district, and outstanding dairy stock-breeder and stock judge in Alberta and in Western Canada, and one of the very earliest settlers of the Horn Hill district, southeast of Red Deer, passed away at the Municipal Hospital on Saturday noon when Mr. John Jones Richards, of Horn Hill, died at the age of 63. The midnight before his death he was seized with a stroke in bed. Mrs. Richards gave such assistance as she could, but she saw that he was in a serious condition and she telephoned for doctor and ambulance; in fact, he never regained consciousness, and passed away twelve hours later. Mr. Richards came out with the family of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Richards, from Montgomeryshire, Wales, landing in Winnipeg in 1882. In 1884 they came to the Horn Hill district, where the father homesteaded on the N.W. quarter of 10-37-27W4th, where Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Richards now live, with the farms of the sons around them. Mr. Wm. Richards died in the spring of 1911, at the age of 93. Mr. J. J. Richards was married to Miss Agnes Leithead, a member of one of the old Horn Hill families, in 1891. He has two sisters in the district, namely Mrs. Chris. White and Mrs. John Cade, and a brother, Mr. Evan Richards, at Calgary. One of the sore blows to Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Richards was the death of their eldest son William in the Great War. The family consists of Mrs. J. L. McKinnon, Penhold; James L. Richards, John Richards, Jr., at Horn Hill; Mrs. J. L. Muir, Edmonton; and Evan, Owen and Margaret Richards. Mr. Richards was a progressive farmer, and for the last twenty years he and his sons have given special attention to the breeding of Ayrshire cattle. The last two years they have won her pries at practically all the big western fairs. Mr. Richards was an expert judge of dairy stock and also of grain, his services being in demand over the province. He was always a valued supporter of the Red Deer Agricultural Society and Fair in stock and grain. His death will leave quite a blank in the ranks of the dairy cattle breeders of Alberta, and in the lessening numbers of the old-timers of Red Deer district.
