COLLINS, PIONEER, PASSES Former Engineer at City Water Plant, Father of Mrs. Frank Barnett Stricken John J. Collins, 83 years old, 1021 North Summit ave., pioneer Sioux Falls and South Dakota resident and former engineer at the city water [illegible] Friday. Born in Ohio, he later moved to Iowa, in which state he married. From Iowa the family came to South Dakota, originally settling near Canova, S. D. where they farmed. He came to Sioux Falls in 1888 and made this city his home ever since. Mr. Collins was a member of St. Joseph's cathedral parish. Surviving are the widow; three daughters, Mrs. Frank Barnett, Mrs. Buell, and Mrs. [illegible] Hanley, all of Sioux Falls; three sons, William N. Collins, city, Thomas Collins [illegible] and Ben Collins [illegible] 43 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. A son, John Collins, died September 18, 1935, at Clearfield, S. D. The Barnett chapel is directing the funeral and time of rites will be announced later. -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Argus-Leader, Sioux Falls, S.D. - 5 December 1937 COLLINS FUNERAL SET FOR MONDAY Services to Be Conducted at St. Joseph's Cathedral at 7:45 A. M. Funeral Services for John J. Collins pioneer Sioux Falls resident who died Saturday, will be conducted at 7:45 o'clock Monday morning at St. Joseph's Cathedral it was announced Saturday night. Burial will be made in the family plot in the local Catholic cemetery. The remains will be taken to the Barnett residence 735 North Spring avenue, where they will remain until time for the funeral. Mr. Collins, who was a former engineer at the city water works, was 83 years old and resided at 1021 North Summit avenue. The Barnett funeral chapel has charge of the services.
