Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Thursday, January 5th at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Father DeWayne Kayser as the Celebrant. Visitation will be 5-7 PM on Wednesday at Weiland Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 PM and a Rosary to follow. John was born February 8, 1928 at Madison, South Dakota to John Lang Sr. and Ruth (Grant) Lang. He grew up in Madison where he graduated from Madison Central High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948 and attended General Beadle State College in Madison graduating in 1951 with a major in commercial and social studies and a minor in physical education. He married Ann Friis in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on August 12, 1953. John obtained a Master’s degree from South Dakota State University in 1958. From 1951 to 1955, John taught school and coached in Colman, South Dakota. He then he moved to Lake Central High School in Madison where he taught, coached and was a guidance counselor from 1956 until he retired in 1990. John always had a side business including owning and operating a wholesale and retail bait business. He also farmed and raised cattle for a number of years. John was a police and fire commissioner for the City of Madison between the years of 1968 and 1973. He was a member of the Madison Chamber of Commerce, Madison Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. John was well known in the Madison community for his love of the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. He is survived by four daughters—Christine (Steven) Pharr of Omaha, Nebraska, Catherine (Mark) Miller of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Caroline (Roque) Mentele of Vancouver, Washington and Colleen (Troy) Lenard of Camas, Washington; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
