His graveside funeral service was Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Lower Blue Point Cemetery, Grinnell, with Deacon Diane Eberhart of the United Methodist Church in Grinnell, officiating. Junior was born on Nov. 2, 1923 at Grinnell, the son of John H. and Grace B. (Foster) Harter. He graduated from Grinnell High School in 1942. Junior served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was united in marriage with Doris May Beeler and she and their son died during childbirth. In 1948, he was united in marriage with Peggy Smith. To this union, four children were born, Karen, Ronald, Gary and Connie. Junior and Peggy were later divorced. He worked for Beatrice Foods, Meadow Gold for 31 years, retiring in 1980. He then worked a few years at Grinnell College. On May 31, 1986 he was united in marriage with Shirlee J. Good at Las Vegas, Nev. They made their home in Montezuma. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Post and V.F.W. Post, all in Grinnell. He had also been a member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, yard work and gardening. Junior and Shirlee also followed the grandchildren's school activities. Junior is survived by his wife, Shirlee; his four children, Karen (and Ron) Reimers of Denison; Ronald Harter of Grinnell; Gary (and Deborah) Harter of Flint, Texas, and Connie (and Gary) Lowry of Searsboro; two step-children, Charles (and Ione) Good of Montrose; and Kathy (and Jack) Grife of Montezuma; 12 grandchildren, Troy Bailey, Ryan Bailey, Amanda Berglund, Justin Harter, Amber Jaworski, Tyler Harter, Chad Harter, Cody Harter, Blake Harter, Jennifer Berger, Megan Madden, and Brent Lowry; six step-grandchildren, Richard Grife, Jacki Grife, Ryan Grife, Ronald Grife, John Good and Charlie Good; five great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild; one sister, Lucille Richards of Arizona; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife and son; an infant brother, Harold; and two sisters, Edith Bliven and Grace Allen. Memorials in his name may be directed to the Montezuma Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Department or the Grinnell United Methodist Church.
