Joseph married Gertrude Miller and left four sons, Harry, John, Joseph and Frank. "Highland Pioneer Sketches and Family Genealogies" by Elsie Johnson Ayres - Page 395 The village of New Petersburg nestles among the hills, ten miles east of Hillsboro, a short distance from the larger town of Hillsboro. The farmers in the region around the village did not let the fact that the first railroad in the county bypassed their trading center deter them from raising large herds of pure bred cattle and hogs. There were several very prominent agriculturiats in the area - Godfrey Creamer, Charles Hyer and John Karnes, were of German origin. John Karnes, born May 23, 1811, was killed May 14, 1877, when his team ran away and threw him from his wagon. He was the son of the pioneer, Henry Karnes, 1780-1846, who emigrated to Paint Twp., about the time New Petersburg was laid out. He purchased the original farm cleared by John C. Upp, which had on it a double log cabin, pole barn, blacksmith shop and a good orchard. John Karnes married Eliza, daughter of Isaac Hartman. They improved the farm, especially the orchard. Their only son, Joseph Karnes, born on the farm, Oct. 24, 1841, married Gertrude, daughter of Dickinson Miller, in 1871. The children of Joseph Karnes were Henry, John, Joseph jr., Frank, George, Clyde, Nellie and Clarence Karnes. Today New Petersburg has a population slightly over 200. The post office and the large stores are gone. The Methodists and Presbyterians still meet each Sunday, but a quiet reigns over the once prosperous community.
