Description	:	John Keown was born to William Sean and Isabella Stuart Keown, Scottish immigrants, in Phialdelphia in 1819. His father died when John was a child and to support the family, Isabella hired both John and his brother Samuel to work as apprentices to craftsman. John made his way down to New Orleans to live with an uncle and then returned upriver to St. Louis, Missouri where he learned of the building of the Nauvoo Temple in 1842. Read More	John Keown was born to William Sean and Isabella Stuart Keown, Scottish immigrants, in Phialdelphia in 1819. His father died when John was a child and to support the family, Isabella hired both John and his brother Samuel to work as apprentices to craftsman. John made his way down to New Orleans to live with an uncle and then returned upriver to St. Louis, Missouri where he learned of the building of the Nauvoo Temple in 1842. Looking for work using his trade of masonry, John travelled to Nauvoo and was employed in the building of the new Mormon temple as a stone mason. There John met Mary Ann Morey, daughter of George Morey, and they married in 1843 and resided in Nauvoo until leaving Illinois in 1852 to go with George Morey to Decatur CO, Iowa. John and Mary Ann had 10 children, nine of whom survived infancy. The Keowns and the Moreys were among the first settlers in what was to become Lamoni and Pleasanton, Iowa. John lived the rest of his life in Decatur CO as a farmer. John was a loyal member of the RLDS church in Decatur CO and was ordained a deacon in 1864. His obituary describes him as 'exemplary in his life, quiet and retiring in his temperament, kind and gentle in his disposition and of a public spirited nature.'
