Wilkins, aged 66 years, a resident of Cherokee for the past 17 years, died at his home here Monday morning at 1 o'clock, after an illness lasting only a few days. He was born in Tennessee, but moved with his family to Kansas in 1909. He settled in Cherokee a few years later, and since that time has been actively engaged in business and other lines of endeavor here. Mr. Wilkins is survived by his wife and seven children, Mrs. T.C. Husted, Mrs. W.B. Clark, Mrs. J.E. James, and John G. Wilkins of Fort Worth, Tex., Mrs. W.T. Butler of Weir, Mrs. E.B. Van Riper of Kirkwood, Ill., and James Wilkins of Cherokee; one brother, C.J. Wilkins of Morrisville, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. James Bowman of Fort Scott and Mrs. Tom Bowman of Cherokee. Several other distant relatives also survive. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. of which Mr. Wilkins was a member. The Rev. E.L. Torrence of Cherokee was assisted at the services by the Rev. F.M. Taylor and the Rev. Mr. Howard, of Weir. Burial was made in the Cherokee cemetery. In addition to all the children and other immediate relatives, the following persons were present at the funeral: (lengthy list followed). "Daddy" Wilkins, as we affectionately called him, was a particular friend of ours, and we passed his shop five to eight times a day, and we always had a pleasant something to say to each other. We liked him and his good wife, and the children are all our friends. We saw him the first day he had to go to bed, and were at the house the evening he died but a few hours before. We know him as but few people knew him. It was good for a person just to be around and see him and his son Jim work together. Few father and sons got along so well together. "Daddy" thought anything that Jim did was just right, and Jim thought the same thing about his father. Just fine. Few people knew it, but he was a splendid scribe, and in his younger days taught penmanship. He not only gave his big family a good education but assisted his grandchildren as well. He was the good old fashioned fellow who delighted in doing for his family more than in putting up wealth. He was a splendid workman and certainly knew his trade as but few men. He delighted into looking into things which were new, especially inventions, and in this he is followed by his son Jim. His pastime was playing double-twelve dominoes, and when he wasn't busy or when he wanted to rest, he could give the best a hard tussle. Just a few weeks ago he was telling us that he and mother were going to get out more, and he went out to the Frank Greer sale and bought a Ford, and they had made several trips to their daughter's in Weir in it, and were anticipating many pleasant trips when the end came so suddenly. We will miss his cheerful greeting each morning as we came to work, which had a tendency to make business just a little lighter. This leaves mother and Jim at home alone, but she will be well looked after. Jim is that kind of a son. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Mother Wilkins and the children and we know that they only have good thoughts for the dear old fellow who has passed away. Contributed by Cheryl White
