Bekman, retired Alton merchant tailor, died this Wednesday morning at 5:30 at the Grossmann hospital, Orange City, where he had been a patient for three weeks. Mr. Bekman’s death at the age of nearly 75 years ends a successful and honorable career extending over a long period of years. Coming here as a boy of 11 years with his parents and family from the Netherlands, he early was trained by his father, pioneer tailor here, in the tailoring trade and business. For 64 years he lived in the same home in Alton, where the family came direct from the Netherlands, doing business in the same block. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 7th at 2:00 p.m. in the Gospel church, with which he was associated for some years. The body will be at the Allen Funeral Home where friends may view it any time before the services. The four Beckman children were all here last week. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bekman of San Francisco who left Friday for St. Paul to spend a few days with the former’s sister, Mrs. R. L. Corbin, are returning to Alton Friday by car with Dr. and Mrs. Corbin. State Senator Elmer K. Bekman is expected this Wednesday evening. Mrs. Gertrude Fields of Batavia, Ill., who was here last week to see her father while he was conscious, may not be able to return for the funeral. John Klein Bekman was born in Zutphen, Gelderland, the Netherlands, Feb. 15, 1878. At the age of 11 years he came with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Bekman, an older brother and two sisters to the United States March 18, 1889. The family located in Alton where the father entered the merchant tailoring business. Both of the sons, Henry and John, learned the trade from their father. The senior Bekman bought a tailoring establishment at Orange City for his son Henry and John became the business manager for his father at Alton. At the age of 21 he was married to Katie Lucas, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Lucas of Alton. To this union six children were born, two, Lewis and Robert, having died in infancy. The surviving children are Elmer, Ottumwa; Dora, Mrs. R. L. Corbin of St. Paul, Mrs. Gertrude Fields of Batavia, Ill., Richard of San Francisco, Calif. Mrs. Bekman died Feb. 9, 1940. In 1941 Mr. Bekman married Mrs. Elizabeth Westerfield of Omaha, who survives with the four children; a granddaughter, Mrs. Richard Larew of Iowa City and a great grandson, Richard Ellis Bekman Larew. Mr. Bekman had been eagerly anticipating making the acquaintance of the new great grandson. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Smedley of Alton. The brother Henry and sister Dena, Mrs. Peter Lucas, preceded Mr. Bekman in death. Step-children who were closely associated and very fond of their father include Mrs. Esther Laverty of Harrisburg, Pa., Herbert, Elizabeth, Mrs. Paul Frew and Art, all of Omaha. All are expected except Mrs. Laverty, with their families for the funeral Saturday. In his younger years Mr. Bekman served on the local Board of Education for some years. During his entire lifetime he has devoted much time and effort to religious work, for many years in the local Presbyterian church and more recently in the Gospel church at Orange City. He practices his Christian principles and was upright in business dealings, a kind neighbor and friend, [a] good citizen who will be missed by many.
