November 30, 2016 ****** John married Grace Starkenburg in May of 1966. ****** Obituary from VanEtten-Oolman-VanGelder Funeral Home John Kool 93, of Normal, Ill., and formerly of Sioux County, died Thursday, May 25, 1989, in the Orange City Municipal Hospital. Services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday in Dover Avenue Alliance Church in Orange City with Rev. Dr. C. Orville Kool and the Rev. Robert Vander Schaaf officiating. Burial will be prior to the service time at Nassua Township Cemetery, near Alton. Visitation will be after 7 p.m. today with the family present from 7-8:30 p.m. in the VanEtten-Oolman-VanGelder Funeral Home in Orange City. Mr. Kool was born Nov. 16, 1895, at Hospers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I. On September 12, 1923, he married Anna Marie Born at Newkirk. The couple farmed in the Newkirk and Orange City areas. He was also involved in a feed store and insulation business. In later years he served as night watchman for the city of Alton. Mrs. Kool died April 1, 1962, at Orange City. He married Grace Starkenburg in May 1966. They made their home in Volga, South Dakota. She died January 16, 1977, in Brookings S.D. In 1980 he moved to Illinois where he made his home with a son and daughter-in-law. Since March 1987 he had lived at the Illinois Veterans Home. Mr. Kool was a member of College Ave. Baptist Church in Normal, former member of the Alton Reformed Church where he served on the consistory: and was a former member of Dover Ave. Alliance Church. He was a member of Floyd Post 200, American Legion in Alton where he was the last surviving veteran of World War I. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Dr. C. Orville Kool and Joyce; Four grandchildren, Keith, Kendra, Kurt and Karla; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Tom Kool of Sioux City; and a sister, Margaret Van Peursem of Ocean City, California. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew and James Kool and a sister, Ann Roelfson.
