Description	:	John Patten was born in Allegheney county, Pa., Nov. 12, 1831, died June 17, 1917 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Minnie Fultz, in Des Moines where he spent the last few months of his life. Read More	John Patten was born in Allegheney county, Pa., Nov. 12, 1831, died June 17, 1917 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Minnie Fultz, in Des Moines where he spent the last few months of his life. Mrs. Hattie Green, one of the daughters came to Brooklyn and with other of the family cared for her father until his removal to Des Moines after which she constantly ministered to his wants and comforts. The entire family did everything possible for their father during his affliction. Father Patten belonged to one of the large sturdy families of Pennsylvania, consisting of three daughters and nine sons. All grew to manhood and womanhood. The first death was at the age of sixty. Three brothers are living, Henry of Missouri was present at the funeral. With his parents he came to Holmes county, Ohio, when but three years of age. Later in life he moved to Fulton county, Ill., where he was united in marriage with Anna G. Shepherd, March 4, 1858. To them were born ten children, three of whom died in infancy. The other seven, four sons and three daughters are living and were present at the funeral except Henry who resides in the Dominion of Canada. After Father and Mother Patten were married they lived in Henry county, Ill., for ten years, coming to Iowa, they settled on the farm where they lived until a few years ago when they purchased property in South Brooklyn making that their home until the death of the wife and mother. Mr. Patten was spoken of by all who knew him best as a loving father, kind neighbor and a good citizen of high worality and integrity. He read his Bible, followed the dictates of his conscience. He did not regard the present as being all of life but looked upon it as a preparatory scene in which faith may be cultivated—hope expanded—charity exercised—and the living prepared for a brighter and better home beyond. He was a patient sufferer during all his afflictions and left this testimony that he was not afraid to die and that he was prepared to meet his Maker. He passed away Sunday morning after a long and good life at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 5 days. Funeral services were held Tuesday, conducted by Rev. J. H.
