Mr. Kurtzweil was quite a hor- ticulturalist and was especially in- terested in flowers for years and until within the last year or two he specialized in the growing and hybridizing of gladiolis. He was connected with the Iowa Seed Co. for many years. His life has been fittingly told in the obituary contributed as follows written by those who knew him best. John Kurtzweil, who is known to the entire community as Grand- pa Kurtzweil, was born in Bo- hemia, Austria in the year 1830, and departed this life in Altoona, Iowa, Saturday July 16 just as the clock was striking twelve. He came to America in 1857 with his young wife and baby boy. They lived in Wiscinsin where by hard work and economy he secured a good farm. Father and Mother Kurtzweil were devout Roman Catholics, until their boy while attending a protestant Sunday School was given a bible in which the father became interested. He called the attention of his neigh- bors to the strange book and they would come together evenings and have him read it to them but when the Rev. Father priest found it out he commanded the reading to cease and demanded the book that he might burn it. This lead to an open rapture between the church and Mr. Kurtzweil and for a number of years he had no confidence in any kind of religion. In the year 1869 he came to Iowa and bought 80 acres of prairie in Madison county. As soon as a school house was built the people came together Sundays and held meetings and Sunday School. Having no where else to go on Sundays, Mr. Kurtzweil attended these meetings and became glor- iously converted and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church organized in that com- munity. He afterward moved to Greenfield, then to Des Moines and ten years ago the entire fam- ily came to Altoona where he un- ited with the M. E. Church. Grandma Kurtzweil died shortly after they came here. Grandpa was a christian gentleman, he was a hard worker, he was a hard worker all his life, he made lots of money and gave it away, he helped many young men to get a start in life and more than one church has had its existance made possible because of his generousity. His life was aptly summed up in a remark made by his own son, "I have never known father to do a dis- honerable thing in his life." We will all miss him. Not only his son and family but the church and the entire community. He has been a prominent figure on our streets, always jovial and kind and respected by both old and young. He is survived by two brothers and a sister in Wisconsin and a sister in Kansas besides his son M. Kurtzweil of this place. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church Tuesday, July 18, at 11 a. m. conducted by the pastor Rev. C. H. Miller. The text was taken from the book of Numbers, "Let me die the death of the righteous and let my last end be like his." The body was laid to rest in the Altoona cemetery. "His toil past His work is done; And he is fully blest He fought the fight, the vic- tory won And enetered unto rest." C.H.M.
