CLARK Was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, October 5, 1836, died at his home near Pawnee City, Nebraska, February 26, 1917. All the education he got was in the common schools, which supplied the school teachers of the section where he lived. Hence at the age of eighteen he commenced teaching at $18. per month, 24 days for a month. Teaching during the winter months and farming on the barren hills brought him to the breaking out of the civil war. He enlisted in the 104th Ohio infantry in 1862 and served as a private until the close of the war, being present at the surrender of General Joe Johnson's army in North Carolina. Once more in civil life he taught and farmed by turns until 1867, when he was married to Miss Hattie A. Derrick, who lived but 15 months. Having acquired some knowledge of printing in earlier life, he followed type setting, being for a while editor of the Buckeye State at Lisbon, Ohio, and later working on the Pittsburgh Leader for eight years. In the mean time he was married to Miss Mary E. White of Shannon, Carroll county, Ill. To this union were born three children, Ida May, who died in early childhood, and Ella Viola and Alice Belle, who survive, Mrs. Clark having departed this life October 17, 1902. When it became necessary to quit the newspaper in order to save his sight, he sought a home on the charming prairies of Nebraska, where he moved in March, 1881, and since then lived the pleasant, peaceful, quiet life of a Nebraska farmer. Mr. Clark in early life made a profession of his faith in Christ and united with the Methodist church. Later in life he became a member of the Presbyterian church, and in April, 1907, he united with the First United Presbyterian church of Pawnee City and remained a consistent member thereof until the time of his death. Mr. Clark was a man of extensive information, arising from his habit of constant reading of the most informing books and papers. This made him a man of a versatile character and also very decided in his views, both in politics and religion, and also constituted him a foeman that but few wished to encounter in debate. Originally a practical abolitionist, he rejoiced in the privilege of helping end up the system of human slavery, and after the work of national reconstruction he devoted himself largely to the destruction of the hated liquor system and congratulated himself greatly that the last public act of his life was the opportunity to cast a vote to make Nebraska constitutionally dry. A strong defender of all form of civic righteousness and social reforms, and also of doctrinal purity, has gone to his final reward. Funeral was held at his late home on Wednesday of this week at 2:30 p.m. and burial was made in the Pawnee City cemetery. PAWNEE REPUBLICAN, March 1, 1917. Provided by contributor Luella Hinrichsen
