For several years of his life he was a consistent, active, and useful member of the Baptist church in this place. Amongst all classes of the community he was highly and deservedly esteemed. It is but giving tribute to whom tribute is due to affirm that "in no situation of life was he ashamed or afraid to perform his duty, or to act his part with firmness and constancy; true to God whom he worshipped, and true to the faith in which he professed to believe; full of affection to his brethren of mankind; faithful to his friends, generous to his enemies, warm with compassion to the unfortunate; self-denying to little private interests and pleasures, but zealous for public interests and happiness; magnanimous, without being proud; humble, without being mean; just, without being harsh; simple in his manners, but manly in his feelings; on his word you could entirely rely; his countenance never deceived you, for his professions of kindness were the effusions of his heart. He was one, in short, whom, independent of any views of advantage, you could choose as an associate, trust as a friend, and love like a brother." His illness was protracted and severe, but borne throughout with the utmost patience and resignation to the Divine will. He has left a sorrowing widow and four small children to mourn their loss. "Dearest brother, thou hast left us, Here thy loss we deeply feel; But 'tis God that hath bereft us, He can all our sorrows heal." J.C. Hurd. Chester, Nov. 14th, '58.
