Description	:	CASCADE, Iowa - John L. Gross, 89, of 1442 Route 136, Cascade, died at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center- Dubuque. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Cascade, with the Rev. Daniel Krapfl officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cascade, where military rites will be accorded by the Cascade American Legion Post 528. He was born on Aug. 10, 1915, in Cascade, son of George and Frances (Breitbach) Gross. He received his education in the South Dakota schools. He married Ella Kelchen on Nov. 29, 1945, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley. He was a World War II Army veteran. John was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade. He served as past director of the Hopkinton Creamery and was a retired volunteer for the Cascade Fire Department. He also was a member of the Cascade American Legion Post 528 for more than 50 years. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Surviving are his wife, Ella Gross, of Cascade; four children, Carol (Gary) Olson, of Minnetonka, Minn., and Tom Gross, Gary (Barb) Gross and Gail (Bill) Schmidt, all of Cascade; seven grandchildren, Jeremy (Patty) Grove, Ben and Matt Olson, Jill (Traviss) Tubbs, Jeff (Becky) Gross and Lisa and Greg Schmidt; a great-grandchild, Caitlynn Tubbs; four brothers, Ed (Mona) Gross and Albert (Phyllis) Gross, both of Cascade, Frank (Kathleen) Gross, of Farmington, N.M., and Pete Gross, of Denver; six sisters-in-law, Virginia Gross, of Dubuque, Veronica Gross, of Cascade, Lucille Till, of Farley, Delores Weydert, of Peosta, Helen Koppes, of Monmouth, and Mary Ostwinkle, of Placid; a brother-in-law, Joseph (Lucille) Kelchen, of Farley; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, George, Louis, Leo, Robert and Wilfred J. Gross; and four sisters-in-law and eight brothers-in-law. A John L. Gross Memorial Fund has been established. A special thanks to Dr. Schreiber and staff and Pam and Caleb from Mercy Home Care for the wonderful, caring treatment of John through the years, but especially the last two weeks.
