Description	:	John L. Wallem passed away April 3, 2013. He was born on May 29, 1918, at his rural family farm to Norwegian immigrants. He graduated from Beresford High School and was later drafted by the U.S. Army. He served in the cavalry at Fort Myer in Arlington, VA and also guarded the White House and U.S. Treasury Department. Rommereim on July 3, 1945. Together the couple farmed in Lincoln County, SD. They were members of Lands Lutheran Church where he was President of the Congregation, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and Trustee. John was also on the Lincoln County Board of Education in the 1970’s. In 1975, the family moved to Sioux Falls where John worked for the U.S. Postal Service until 1983. He then worked for Anderson Floor Covering for 5 years. They became members of Our Saviors Lutheran Church where they were involved with the Meals on Wheels program and grew to enjoy their life together in the city. John was a member of the Optimist Club and held several club positions including President. After the death of his wife, Carolyn, in 2005, John moved to The Inn on Westport in Sioux Falls where he resided among many old and new friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Anna and his two older brothers, Luther and Almer. He is survived by his two daughters, Karen Wallem (Columbia, MD), and Karla (Lowell) Stavnes (Goodridge, MN); his precious granddaughter, Ashley W. Stavnes (Grand Forks, ND); 6 nieces and nephews; 4 grand-nephews; and 7 great-grand nieces. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to John’s nephew, Loren (Canton, SD), who provided comfort and support to us all during John's final weeks. A Memorial Service will be held at The Inn on Westport on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at 2:00 PM. The family will be present one hour prior to the service to greet visitors. Interment will be at Lands Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, you may consider a donation to the Lands Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund or The Inn on Westport Memorial Fund.
