It is not certain which. He was the son of a typical pioneer family and was contented to stay about home until he reached the age of eighteen. About this time talk of the fabulous opportunities in California, particularly the gold fields, reached his ears and he decided to go west. He joined up with an ox drawn wagon train and headed for the gold fields in 1848. The western trails at that early date were undeveloped and the way long and tedious. So trying, in fact, that after considerable time and some distance on the route dissent ion developed among the group and the party split up. Part of them elected to turn back but not stout hearted John Griffith. After three long years and many trials and tribulations he finally reached California just a few days before Sept 17, 1850. On arrival in the Mother Lode Country he stopped at Hangtown which is now Placerville. He then came on to Dogtown which was a section of Magalia at that time. In this community John tried his luck at mining but soon elected to look for work that might be less back breaking. A popular, well- attended gambling hall and saloon known as the "Pair of Dice" had grown up down the ridge a short distance from Magalia. From this saloon came the name of the popular and thriving modern community of Paradise. It is so related that the men in the gambling hall got rather quarrelsome and out of hand at times, often resulting in fatalities on one side or both. To prevent all this obstruction to the games and consequent loss of revenue to the owner, it was decided to place a shotgun guard in an elevated chair high above the gambling tables. This was just the job for John Lacey. While it might not develop ca louses it didn't cause the back ache common to mining. while on duty he could sit and relax and while off, he could settle, in a most decisive way any disputes which might arise over his decisions. In later years he often remarked that while he had never lost a fist fight that he had never won one. At this point he would exhibit two hands with the knuckles beaten flat down on both., Because of his tall stature, rugged character and modest disposition he was commonly called "Turk Griffith". In Oroville on December 16, 1865 John Lacey took to himself a lifelong mate in the person of Euphemia Detro. John and Pheme were launched on a career destined to bring much happiness and nine children Chico Record, Sunday Morning, August 22, 1920, pg 5 col 1: John L. Griffith Will Be Buried Tuesday. Services for the late John Lacy Griffith, Chico pioneer who died at his home here late Friday night at the age of 91 years, will be held from the Fetters & Williams chapel. Interment will be made in Chico cemetery.
