He came to Canada in 1927 with his widowed mother and 4 younger siblings, Jacob, Casper, Elisabeth and Conrad, and helped to establish their homestead in Valleyview, Alberta. He married his 1st wife, Augusta Magdalena Krieger (1911-1952) on 20 Jun 1937 in Winkler, MB. She was the daughter of John & Olga Krieger.
