Read More	September 26, 2011 John Leo Winner [Lonaconing] Cumberland Times-News LONACONING — John Leo Winner, 73, Lonaconing, died on Sept. 25, 2011, at Western Maryland Health System surrounded by his family. He leaves his wife of 50 years, Anne Perry (Chappell) Winner; his son, David Winner and wife Beth; his son, Chris Winner and wife Alison; and his daughter, Molly Stewart and husband Todd. Very special to John were his six grandchildren, Justin Winner and wife Stephanie, Kaylyn Tinsley, Shae Winner, Courtney Winner, Colten Winner, and Molly Winner. John is also survived by his siblings, Elizabeth Woods and husband Jim, Bernard Winner and wife Dot, Kay Larkin, Sr. Kathleen Vernard, Rose Montgomery and husband Bob, Jim Winner and wife Betty Lou, Hank Winner and wife Barbara, and Gerry Winner and wife Phyllis. Many nieces, nephews and close friends mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Kathleen Winner; his sister, Mary Winner; his sister, Veronica Beckner and husband Raymond; and his son, Theodore James Winner. John was born on March 4, 1938 in Lonaconing, the son of the late Bernard and Kathleen Winner. John was a lifelong resident of Lonaconing. He worked as the Lonaconing Town Administrator for 30 plus years. John was a member of the George's Creek Promotions Council, the Lonaconing Fireworks Committee, The Town Christmas Lighting Committee, and various other organizations aimed at the preservation and improvement of the Town of Lonaconing. Lonaconing was a special place to John and he took great pride in seeing it maintained and beautified. Those close to John know that he had a great passion for sports. He spent many, many hours in gymnasiums and on fields across the area watching his own children and as of late, his grandchildren as they participated in various athletics. He rarely missed a game. John, himself, was an avid golfer and a member for many years of the Maplehurst Country Club, Frostburg. He enjoyed a good golf game with his close group of friends and also his sons and grandsons. John was loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lonaconing with Father Eric Gauchat, celebrant. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery and serving as pallbearers will be John's close friends, Richard Grandstaff, George Lauder, David Shook, John Kinnie, Jack Coburn, Bob Lupton and Warren "Whiz" Foote. At the request of the family memorial contributions may be made to Sodality of St. Mary's Church, 16102 St. Mary's Church Terrace, Lonaconing, MD 21539. LONACONING — John Winner, longtime town administrator of Lonaconing, died Sunday night at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center where he had been a patient for a week, according to Mayor Jack Coburn. Winner was 73. "John absolutely was a large asset to the community," Coburn said Monday morning. "Nobody will ever know how many grants he got for the town. My phone is ringing off the hook, now that the news is getting out." A lifelong resident of the George's Creek town, Winner will be remembered, Coburn said, for his dedication to constantly improving the drinking water system. "His work on the water lines and now obtaining backup generators was constant," Coburn said. "In respect for John, the flags have been put out and Town Hall will be closed Wednesday." Warren Foote, an elected town official for 25 years and a close personal friend, said Monday that Winner had a remarkable way with people, especially in heated situations. "He had a knack that way. He could be friends with someone when nobody else would." Foote said his family and Winner's were from the same part of Lonaconing. "We played softball together for years." Former Allegany County Commissioner Dale Lewis recalled Winner as an all-around good guy, a family man, church man and dedicated public employee. "He graduated from (Valley) high school in '54 and I graduated in '56. John enjoyed watching his kids play sports and more recently his granddaughters play volleyball and basketball." Mark Greenwald, a former town official, said Winner had a great sense of humor. "I sat beside him at council meetings and when it got long-winded he would elbow me and tell me to make a motion to adjourn. "Then I found out that he did that to everybody who sat beside him at the meetings over all those years. One night the meeting was opened as usual with the Pledge of Allegiance and when we sat down to start business he gave me the elbow." Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will take place there today from 2 to 8 p.m.
