Investigation proved that rumor to be too well founded. J. I. Stanley left Harlan Monday morning for Defiance. He was on one of his regular trips for butcher's stock, as was his custom. Whether he had a prescutiment of evil that was to overtake him or not is a matter of conjunction. But at any note it is known that he asked two or three different persons to accompany him; he said he was not feeling well; he complained of pains in his breast and about the region of his heart. However, he set out in his buggy and made the trip all right for Defience. He was seen there by Mr. S.J. McCormick of the Central house of this city. Mr. Stanley told him that that he was feeling very ___ and wanted to get home as soon as possible. Mr. McCormick preceded him on the way home, two of three miles. Mr. Honeycutt was also in Defience and started home a few miles behind Mr. Stanley. He was horrified upon reaching the bridge near Muck's grove to fine the lifeless remains of Mr. Stanley in the ravine below. Some German women and German man were there and had pulled Mr. Stanley our of the mud where he had fallen. He was insensible, death having probably resulted from a fracture to his spinal column. The story told by those who witnessed the accident is to the effect that the first seen of the team was when it was coming down the large hill just north of the bridge. The horses were on the gallop, yet part of the time did and appear to be running very fast. The could not tell whether anyone was in the buggy or not. The road makes a sharp turn to the east just before the bridge is reached. It is high structure with banisters. ....strike the bridge squarely. The first section of banisters was torn away by the collision an marks plainly above where one of the animals went clear off of the bridge but was pulled back on by the larger horse. The buggy was there disengaged from the team which was found some three quarters of a mile away. Mr. Stanley was lying about fifty feet from where the buggy first struck the bridge. There are two theories of death. The first is that it resulted from violence due to the strike of the .......that he met his death from heart trouble or something of the kind which accounted for the team getting away. This means tenable, because those who knew him say that Mr. Stanley was a very careful drives and was capable if passed of his full faculties of managing most any kind of a fractious team; At any rate it is a very sad occurrence and one that shocks the community. The deceased was well known in this country where he has been an honored of men for many years. It is said he ran the first butcher shop the town had ever had, some eighteen or twenty years ago. In manner he was quiet and unassuming, attending strictly to his own business. The least they may he said of his is that no man can be found who will say aught against his life or character. As soon as word reached Harlan, Sheriff Geo. Rainbow left with others immediately for the scene. It was decided that no inquest was requited and the remains were brought to Harlan and sent to his home in the west part of the city. the funeral took place this afternoon and was quite largely attended.
