Description	:	John Van Surksum, 77, of Hull passed away on Monday, April 26, 2010, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Doon United Reformed Church in Doon, Iowa. Mr. Simon Lievaart will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a prayer service at 9:45 a.m. Thursday at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. Visitation will be after 3:30 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. John LeRoy was born on June 23, 1932, in Hull, the son of Gerrit and Bertha (Bouma) Van Surksum. He was raised at Hull, where he attended the Christian School and Western Christian High School. On Dec. 2, 1955, he married Martha Jane Bliek in Hull. They farmed in Hull and in southwest Minnesota. He was also employed by Rhoorda Machine Factory in Rock Valley, Iowa, Demco Manufacturing in Boyden, Iowa, and Tri-State Livestock Auction in Sioux Center, Iowa. Mr. Van Surksum was a member of the United Reformed Church. He enjoyed gardening and doing yardwork. Survivors include his wife of more than 54 years; three children, Edwin Van Surksum of Los Angeles, Calif., Douglas Van Surksum and his wife, Joleen of Hull, and Jana Van Surksum of Mission Viejo, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Tara and Colton Van Surksum. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Muriel Vander Well and Margarite Van Surksum. Memorials may be directed to the church. Sioux City Journal.com
