John Leslie, a long time resident of Cass county, died at 4:30 yesterday afternoon at his home, six miles southeast of Lyman, death resulting from old age. Mr. Leslie was born in County Donegal in the Emerald Isle in 1834 about seven miles from Londonderry. His parents were John and Nancy (Womsley) Leslie, cultured and wealthy people who passed their lives in the mother country. When he was even (seven?) years of age he came to America, locating in Philadelphia, in whose public schools he received his education. In 1856 he joined an elder brother, who had come west and located in Cass county. He enlisted in 1862 in Company I, Twenty-Third Iowa Infantry, but was soon afterwards discharged for disability. He went west and engaged for a time in mining and after two years there came back to this county, locating in Edna township. By dint of hard work he and his family accumulated a thousand acres of land in Edna township, all paid for. On the 14th of May, 1878, deceased was married to Miss Mary Elizabeth Cudney, who survives him. They were married in this city by the Rev. Reese, at that time pastor of the M. E. church here. Mr. Leslie served as supervisor from his part of the county in 1868 and 1869 and he had held other offices. He was respected by all who knew him. One son, William W. Leslie, besides the widow, survives him. The funeral services are to be held Thursday at one o'clock at the late home, the M. E. pastor of Cumberland officiating, and the interment being made in the Cumberland cemetery.
