Lewis 17 Sep 1828-23 Feb 1900 The following bio was kindly supplied by BMC 47826846: John Lewis was born in Calais, France on Apr. 5, 1783, and he died Dec. 3, 1848 in Wickford, RI. He was the first of the family to immigrate to the USA. John Lewis departed Calais, France for America with his bother Nathaniel in the late 18th century. Family sources state that they sailed on the same ship that brought Rochambeau to Newport, Rhode Island. A letter dated Jan. 20, 1970 from Aunt Elsie Bennett to Albert Lewis states that Nathaniel died in Newport, RI. Also, the letter states that John married a woman named Rebecca (Pearce) in Newport, RI. Aunt Elsie gave her name as Harriet Pierce, but her headstone lists Rebecca (Pearce). John & Rebecca moved to Wickford, RI, and they had a large family. George, their grandson opened a business called Lewis Brothers Fishermen. The business became too big for him to handle alone, so he invited his brothers to join him. Aunt Elsie says, ‘They had the first motor driven boat on the Bay, GASOLINE MOTOR DRIVEN." A quote from Aunt Elsie's letter follows. "As you know from records in the Standard the Lewis Bros. were shipping four tons of fish each day to the Fulton Market in New York and then later to Providence Mkts. After Gasoline Motors began flooding the Bay the fishing dropped off so that in 1915 they were shipping only three or four barrels a day…. The waves caused by the high speed propellers stir up the grass bottom land destroy the feeding grounds and cause silt to settle many miles away." The Lewis brothers were honest and trustworthy men. One day, they caught a schooner whose skipper was stealing fish from the Lewis traps. The skipper was arrested for stealing the fish. He was told that if he had asked first instead of stealing, the Lewis brothers would have given him the fish. Aunt Elsie wrote the following in her letter. "…the man who started the Prov. Public Mkt. asked for a barrel of fish which he had no money to pay for when he first opened and my father gave him two barrels. Then there was the two man war with the government. The Bros. had a trap off Conanicut Island, between Fort Wetherill and Fort Adams. They were missing some 80 barrels of fish each week so decided to catch the pirates. My father and uncle Fred were the only ones who were hunters and had shotguns, so the two of them pitched a tent on the Island and waited, soon they saw boats put out from the Fort… they caught pirates. They were soldiers from the Fort." In addition, Aunt Elsie explained how to sand a boat bottom when the ship needed to be repainted at the Saunder's shipyard. "Everyone went fishing the day before for DOG FISH these were to be cut up into hand size pieces to be used as sandpaper to sand down the hull and bottom. The children were allowed to be on the ship when the work was finished and she slid down the waves and hit the water." John Lewis, his wife, Rebecca, and their children Mary & George were removed from North Kingstown historical cemetery #45 to Elm Grove Cemetery after 1881. They are buried in section S1.
