Description	:	John's first wife was Carcilla Baker Sinclair. They were married at Blackville, New Brunswick, Canada on January 18, 1877. Their first few children were born in New Brunswick. In about 1886 they immigrated to the U.S. and in 1900 were living in Deadwood, South Dakota. Their children were: Victor E. (Spanish American War volunteer), Laura Kate, Alice E., Charles L. and Frank Sinclair. Carcilla died in 1902. John Lockard SCOFIELD was born at Blackville (North. Co.) May 6th, 1852, his father being a grandson of late Major Jas. SCOFIELD of Connecticut who emigrated to New Brunswick in 1783. His father's mother was a daughter of Lockard JONES, a well known South Carolina planter of Colonial times after whom the subject of our sketch was named. Mr. Scofield was appointed J.P. at the age of 22, which office he held as long as he lived in the county. He was elected and served seven terms in the Council, was census enumerator for his district in 1880 and filled the office of Land Commissioner from 1880 to 1883 when a change of government placed the spoils of office in the hands of his political opponents. He came to the U.S. in January 1884 and spent the greater part of two years in Pennsylvania and Kentucky, travelling extensively in the South and in January 1886 came to Deadwood where he remained until the following spring. He came to Custer County to take charge of the lumber operations of Fish & Hunter. After they closed their contract, he took a homestead on section 32 range 7 east, on which he resided for five years, proving upon the same a little over a year ago. Since then he has been in the employ of Odo Reder of this city as book keeper and general manager. John L. Scofield was married Jan. 15, 1877 to C.B. SINCLAIR. He conducted a large mercantile business from 1872 to 1883 when, owing to financial reverses, he made an assignment of his estate for the benefit of his creditors. During his residence in New Brunswick, Mr. Scofield took a prominent part in all public enterprises and was instrumental in securing the construction of a railroad through that part of the province in which he lived.
