Description	:	John "Long John" Jennings was the eldest son of Philip Jennings Jr. (b.1749 Orangeburg District) and Isabel Baxter (ca.1757:8-21-1792) married 2-16-1773. Isabel's parents were Andrew (1732-1799) and Mary Elizabeth Baxter (1734-1794) married 1753. John, great grandson of Gideon Jennings, one of Orangeburg's earliest settlers, was part of a long line of land owners that included being one of the largest land owners in Orangeburg County in the early 1800's. John, great grandson of Gideon Jennings, one of Orangeburg's earliest settlers, was part of a long line of land owners that included being one of the largest land owners in Orangeburg County in the early 1800's. John married at age 23 (4-9-1800) to his first cousin, Elizabeth Smith (1785-1804),daughter of Mary Jennings and her second husband Isaac Smith. In 1801 they moved to Roberts Swamp, acreage acquired by royal grants from King George II of England, and had been owned by his family for three generations. Elizabeth died in 1804 leaving John with a three year old son and a one year old baby girl. He married two years later (2-28-1807) to Mary Stroman (1789-1832), daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Tyler Stroman. Mary died at age 43 during chidbirth, leaving two daughters and seven sons. An infant son died one month later and a two year old died later. John married six months after Mary's death to a widow named Jane Cannon. They had no children together. John gave freely to his community and the church.He was instrumental in the founding of the Union Methodist Episcopal Church near Cope,SC in about 1808.It is said he was tall with brown eyes and brown hair, with an ever jocular mood, and a deep hearty laugh.He died eleven days after the death of his third wife and was buried near his three wives on the plantation in the Jennings Family Cemetery. Thus passed the patriarch of a very large part of the Jennings family in Orangeburg County. He was spared the "fall of his empire" when the Civil War began two years later, and also the burning and pillaging of his community by Sherman's troops in February 1865.
