He was a Little Piecer meaning that he fixed the broken threads for the spinners. John worked as a Piecer until he was 11 then as a weaver until he was 16. John then worked at the new mill until he was 25. The mill was a 3 mile walk from his home so he usually got up around 4 am to make it to work by 6 and then left at 7 and arrived home around 9 pm. He was also a Sunday School teacher and a Librarian of the Lord Street Unitarian Sunday School. When he was 19 John became concerned about his health as he had a bad cough and congested lungs due to the poor ventilation in the cotton mill. After writing to a doctor, his health improved as he followed the doctor's instructions. John left England for America and arrived in New York Aug 2, 1850. He lived with a friend Harry Yarlick in Connellville Pennsylvania for a month. He left his trunk with Harry and headed by boat to Pittsburgh then onto Cincinnati. He worked in cotton mills and on farms including Golvin Summers in Indiana. On Feb 8, 1852 John married Sarah Summers. In the spring of 1853 he traveled to Minnesota to work at farms for a dollar a day compared to the 50 cents he was making in Indiana. After saving his money and working hard, John bought 120 acres in Woodbury County Iowa and 120 acres in Jasper County Indiana. In Nov 1864 he was drafted into the war. John reported to Kendallville, then Indianapolis and on to Chattanooga. He wrote a book on his time in the war. He went thru Dalton GA, as well as by boat thru Cincinnati, Louisville and into North Carolina. His unit went to Washington DC after the war and participated in the Grand Review parade for two days.
