Description	:	John was a miller by trade, and for a number of years was miller at Tasker's (old Davis) Mill at Shaw, then at Chisholm's mill in Ryan's Glade, Kitzmiller's mill at Kitzmiller and West's mill at Swanton. He did considerable work as a carpenter when the town of Elk Garden was building up, but later in life followed farming exclusively, living most of the time in Districts Nos. 1 and 4. HOYE'S PIONEER FAMILIES OF GARRETT COUNTY--Compiled by the Garrett County Historical Society in 1988 On July 28, 1870, Jno. (34) and Lindia (34) Sharpless lived in District 1, Allegany County, Maryland, with their four children, aged 12 to 5 years. Jno. was a farm laborer. Everyone in the family was born in Maryland. Neither Jno. nor Lindia could read. Immediate neighbors were William Sharpless and family and Jno. L. Sharpless and family. On June 7, 1880, John (43) and Lucinda (42) Sharpless lived in District #94, Garrett County, Maryland, with their seven children, aged one month to 20 years. John farmed for a living along with the help of the 20 year old son. John and his mother were born in Maryland, and his father was born in West Virginia. Lucinda and both her parents were born in Maryland. On June 7, 1900, John (64) and Lucinda (63) Sharpless lived in Swanton, Garrett County, with their 20 y/o son. The couple had been married 43 years. Lucinda had borne eight children with eight living at the time of the census enumeration.
