Description	:	John Lyman Smith Jr Obituary John Lyman Smith, only son of Ermina Rhodes Smith and Lyman Smith was born in Chesaning, Saginaw County, Michigan, on February 4th, 1865, and passed away in Valentine, Nebraska, August 25th, 1948, at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 21 days. In 1873 he moved with his parents to Cumming County, Nebraska. In 1888 he filed on a homestead near Shadley Creek, in western Keya Paha county. Read More	John Lyman Smith Jr Obituary John Lyman Smith, only son of Ermina Rhodes Smith and Lyman Smith was born in Chesaning, Saginaw County, Michigan, on February 4th, 1865, and passed away in Valentine, Nebraska, August 25th, 1948, at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 21 days. In 1873 he moved with his parents to Cumming County, Nebraska. In 1888 he filed on a homestead near Shadley Creek, in western Keya Paha county. In 1897 he was employed by his uncle, George Canfield, in Omaha, Mr. Canfield owned a large livery barn and while employed there Mr. Smith was a special driver for the famous scout, Wm. Cody (Buffalo Bill). Later he returned to his land in Keya Paha where he farmed extensively for years. Much of his life was spent caring for his mother who was an invalid for years before her death in 1906; and for his father who was a cripple for ten years. Uncle Johnny, as he was widely and affectionately known, was never married. His kindly nature and consideration for others endeared him to his many friends and relatives. He spent his declining years with the Rex Sharp family in Tripp County, South Dakota, where he was a favorite with the children he loved so well. Surviving relatives are his two nephews, R.L. Sharp of Norden, Nebraska, and Rex Sharp of Millboro, South Dakota, his niece Mrs. Arlie Mahaffa and their families, also a cousin Mrs. Bert Sharp of Springview, Nebraska, and several cousins in other states. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church in Norden, Friday afternoon, August 27th, by Rev. Paul Boyles of Valentine, and interment was in the Norden Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jacob Frauen, Max Frauen, Lloyd Lawrence, Roland Fullerton, Charles Schiffern, and Milan Sharp. Obituary contributed by Patti A. Hereford
