Description	:	John Martin Brurud was born in Norway on June 20, 1862, and died on March 10, 1923, near Canton; Maria Eliason Brurud, was born on April 24, 1860 at Odalen, Ostfold, Norway, and died on Sept. 17, 1951, at the Hawarden Hospital. They were married on March 18, 1885, in the United States and settled on "The Old Brurud Place" which was one mile south, one half mile west and one half mile south of the Newton Hills corner. They were married on March 18, 1885, in the United States and settled on "The Old Brurud Place" which was one mile south, one half mile west and one half mile south of the Newton Hills corner. They also had pur¬chased what presently is the "Boy Scout Camp" at the Newton Hills Park. It was said that the rippling rapids that John and Maria saw there on the Newton Hills land reminded John of Norway and that was the reason he wanted to own that particular area of land. They settled first in a sod or log house and later built a two-story, large, white house. The house had kitchen, dining room, "front" room and bedroom on the main floor with other bedrooms upstairs. John and Maria were the parents of eight children. Clara, the first, married Adolph Christopherson. For their family, see the separate story. Alvin, the second child, died at the early age of two. Martin was single and died at age 34. Oscar and Emma (Mrs. Thomas Bankson) both passed away in the 1970's. Three of the children, Inez (Mrs. Oscar Johnson), Amanda (Mrs. Ora Morrison), and Mabel (Mrs. John Mit¬chell), are still living at this writing. John Brurud was the community blacksmith for the area. His grandson, Morris Christopherson, still recalls Grandpa John Brurud and his blacksmith business and has a sled which John built for him which Morris' grandsons are still using every winter. In his present home is the first bedroom set that his grandmother ever had - and it's still being used today! (The History of Lincoln County, SD page 289)
