Gengler, 51, Oyens, died early Wednesday evening at Sioux City St. Vincent hospital after a brief illness. Deputy Gengler joined the sheriffs department the first of May 1971 to bring the department personnel up to four including sheriff Ed Gruntren and deputies Dennis Osterbuhr and Dolores Wo11. Deputy Gengler several weeks ago had suffered from a flu attack and at that time was admitted to a Sioux City hospital for tests. He was later dismissed. Monday of this week he was taken from his home to Floyd Valley hospital and was transferred from there to St. Vincent hospital Wednesday afternoon. It is reported the deputy sheriff died after suffering complications from a diseased kidney. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine's Catholic church, Oyens, with burial in St. Catherine's cemetery. Rev. Leo Reisberg will officiate and Fisch funeral home at Remsen is in chairge of arrangements, There will be military graveside honors. Deputy Gengler was born July,31, 1920, in Le Mars, a son of the late John and Anna (Gengler) Gengler. He married Lillian Kellen, May 14, 1946, at Remsen. Mrs. Gengler died in August 1969. Deputy Gengler had farmed most of his life. Up until his appointment as deputy sheriff he had owned and operated the Caprice lounge at Oyens for about two years. he has lived in and near the Oyens area all his life. He had served in the navy during world war 2 and was a member of the American Legion, Remsen Lions club, Catholic Order of Foresters, Oyens Community club and Iowa Sheriff's Assn. He was preceded in death by his wife , his mother in 1964 and his father in 1966. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. David (Jeanne) Harpenau of rural Remsen and Lynnette, at home; two sons, Robert, at home, and Richard who is stationed with the navy at Long Beach, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. George (Mary) Garber of Walker, Minn., and two granddaughters.
