Civil war service: Entered service 12 Sep. 1862 for 3 yrs., captured 28 Sep. 1863 at Jonesboro TN. Mustered out 9 June 1865 at Camp Chase.

Wife: Rebecca Downard, married 1884 and died before son Raymond, b. in Athens Co., 5 June 1885, was entered into the O.S.S.O. orphans home in Xenia, Greene Co., OH in 1894. He was in the custody of William Downard at the time. Father John was in the Soldiers' Home in Dayton for awhile.
