Lytle, civil war soldier, former county auditor and postmaster of Washington, passed away at the home of his son, Ralph Lytle southeast of town. Mr. Lytle, who was 87, had been failing for the last several years. His vision began to fail about eight years ago and finally he became totally blind. During the past summer he had been with his son and family, and it was at their home that the end came at 7:20 yesterday evening. Funeral services are planned at the Jones Funeral Home, followed by burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. It had been hoped that E.C. Condit of Denver, one of his comrades during the civil war, might attend; however, he is in the hospital. Mr. Condit is now the only remaining survivor of a group of Jackson township boys who enlisted together in the Nineteenth Iowa, of whom Mr. Lytle was one. John M. Lytle was born in Indiana County Pa., March 26, 1844, a son of Robert and Eliza (Smith) Lytle, who came to Washington county with their family when he was eveven years old. They settled on a farm in Jackson township, and it was there that he was reared and made his home until the outbreak of the civil war. Enlisting in Company C of the Nineteenth Iowa infantry, he served throughout the war, taking part in a number of battles and engagements, including the seige of Vicksburg. He was wounded and captured and for ten months was in a rebel prison at Tyler, Texas. He attended the Washington College and taught school for a time, but later engaged in farming in Grand Prairie where he had lived as a boy. He was married in 1867 to Margaret Glasgow who died in 1898. He was again married in 1901 to Arvilla Lackey, who passed away July 1, 1926. Surviving is one son, Ralph Lytle, and one foster daughter, Carrie Anderson, now Mrs. D.A. Chalmers of Washington. In 1887 Mr. Lytle was elected county auditor, and moved to Washington in that year. He served part of an unexpired term and two full terms in the county office. For several years he was in the drug business on the north side of the square in partnership with the late J. D. Glasgow. He served as postmaster for eight years and served for many years as chairman of the Republican county committee. He also served as elder in the United Presbyterian Church.
