Maxwell, one of the oldest residents of this county and a highly respected citizen passed to the great beyond Monday morning, surrounded by all the members of his family. Mr Maxwell had been in failing health for several years, being confined to his home the greater part of the time. He was an upright, law abiding citizen, a loving husband, an indulgent father and one of the best neighbors a community can have. His loss will be sincerely mourned by a wide circle outside of the immediate family. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Christian church, conducted by Rev Roy Snodgrass of Clarinda and the large attendance attested the high esteem in which he was held by the people of this cummunity. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Interment was in the Shearer cemetery near Siam. John Manley Maxwell was born in Morgan Co, Ind., August 18, 1846. Died at his home in New Market, Iowa, Oct 7, 1918, aged 72 years, 1 month and 9 days. At the age of 7 years he started with his parents to Iowa. On the way his father died at Bloomington, Ill., his mother coming with her family to Iowa, where he has resided ever since. February 21, 1869, he was married to Harriett Creps, to which union were born 10 children, 2 boys and 8 girls, one girl having died in infancy. The rest of the children were present at the service. They are: Charley H. of Canby, Minn., Henry, of New Market, Sarah Arthur, Dollie Reever [Reeves?], Ada Anderson, Cora Savage, of New Market, Lois McDaniels of Billings, Mont., Ella Miller of McCook, Nebr., Florence Snively of Braddyville, Iowa. There are 43 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Besides these, he leaves to mourn his loss, 4 brothers, Dorsey, Jackson, George and Robert, three of whom attended the funeral of their brother. Brother Maxwell accepted Christ at Siam, Ia., having been baptized by Brother Wm. H. Dunlavy in 1883. During these 35 years he has lived a consistent Christian life, always a hard working man, devoted to his family, faithful to the church and contributing his very best to the interests of the kingdom to which he had pledged his life. He bore life's burdens patiently uncomplainingly even through the severe suffering of his last days, always looking serenely to the city which hath foundation whose builder and maker is God.
