Melton Passes Away Following An Attack of Pneumonia. Mr. John Martin Melton, son of John and Ollie Melton, was born in Rutherford county March 19, l851, and departed this life Jan. 14, 1922, aged seventy years, nine ; months and fourteen days. He was taken sick on Jan. 9, and died on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 8 o'clock. He had been afflicted some for the past few years, but his death was caused by pneumonia. All was done for him that loving hands could do, but He who doeth all things well saw best to take him to himself. Mr. Melton was the fourth of a family of ten children, only five of whom survive him. He had one twin sister. Mr. Melton was a man, who delighted in farming, always keeping his farm up to date until failing health. He was a man, who was strictly honest in all his dealings, making his word as good as his note. He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Biggerstaff about forty-eight years ago. They soon began keeping house on the farm where he died. To this union seven children were born, four of whom died in early childhood. Mr. Melton was converted and united with the Baptist church at First Broad about fifty years ago. He was a deacon of the same church about forty five years. He has, been a faithful active member of this church for half a century; always attending church when not providentially hindered. His Christian life has been a great blessing to the cause of Christ in this community. He delighted in the study of God's. Word and in conversation on religious themes. He was a good neighbor, loyal citizen, loving husband, kind father, and earnest Christian. Mr. Melton so cheerful and happy, always trying to help ethers and make them happy and to promote the cause of Christ. To know him was to love him. He made friends with almost everyone he met. Truly it may be truthfully said of him as one of old, "He hath done what he could," always ready to do his Master's will until he heard him call, "Come ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." Mr. Melton leaves a wife and three daughter, Mrs. Julia Harris, Mrs. Rosa Whisnant, and Mrs. Amanda Gamble, and five brothers. C. W. Melton, of Forest City; J. A. Melton, of Bessemer City; J. D., D. L., and Julius Melton, of Golden Valley, also fifteen grand-children and three great grand-children with many other relatives and friends to mourn their loss. Funeral services were j conducted by Rev. H. D. Harrill, of Forest City, assisted by Rev. Smart, at First Broad church, Scripture used Job 14:14; Heb. 11, part of 12, And 14, verses, songs were sung: "Will I be Missed When I am Gone?" "Sometime, Somewhere," "I Will Meet You up There," "Knowing that He is Mine, "Jesus is Coming Again." A large crowd attended the funeral services, and many tears were shed. His body was laid in the First Broad cemetery to wait for the trumpet call of the dead in Christ at the first resurrection. The was covered with flowers, ferns and evergreens. May his faithful wife have the prayers of her Christian friends and the children so listen to their parents' counsel and the Word of God, that when that wonderful, day shall dawn there may be a glad reunion in Christ with the family circle unbroken.
