Per notes from collection box 12A - Vernon Headley Family Records - Atlantic County Historical Society, Somers Point, NJ, John Mathis Headley was born 4 SEP 1804, village of Waretown, Stafford Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey, and died circa 1835 of "exposure." The notes were written by Vernon Headley, and his father, Elvern Bacon Headley, who are both descendants. It is unknown where they got that information from, but it may have been from a family bible that is now destroyed, and was probably passed down by word of mouth. The area became a part of Ocean County several years later, in 1850. Per Leah Blackman's "History of Little Egg Harbor Township," John is mentioned as son of John and Mary (Mathis) Headley, and he is mentioned to have married Phoebe Lamson from Manahawkin, p. 321. Per deeds, John sold all his land in Stafford Township to his brother, Samuel Benjamin Headley, right before his death, and thus, no estate was left to create a probate record to prove his death date. He may have known he was dying, and decided to sell his land so his young wife Phoebe would have money for herself and their young son, Elwood, because she was under 21 and would have needed a guardian appointed of the estate. John's wife Phoebe was daughter of Edward Lamson, Jr., and Catherine (Bennett) Lamson. Edward Lamson, Jr., was son of Edward Lamson, Sr., and Ruth (Lewis) Lamson. Catherine (Bennett) Lamson was daughter of Private Samuel Bennett. Edward Lamson, Sr., and Private Samuel Bennett were the original trustees to the chapel associated with these burial grounds, per 1803 deed, and being that all the aformentioned Bennetts and Lamsons are buried here, I assume John Mathis Headley is probably buried here, too. I am requesting if someone can look to see if his headstone is in this burial ground. It may be engraved as John Mathis Headley, John M. Headley, or just J.H. or J.M.H.
