Description	:	John M. Collins, 77, of 221 West Pleasant Street, Hillsboro, died at Highlands Community Hospital early Saturday night, following a brief illness. He was the son of James C. and Alice Beatty Collins, and was born at Folsom, in Highland County, October 27, 1882. John attended Buckley School. For 43 years he was engaged in delivery service in Hillsboro, retiring January 29, 1954, from the employ of Swonger Dairy in this city. Collins, 77, of 221 West Pleasant Street, Hillsboro, died at Highlands Community Hospital early Saturday night, following a brief illness. He was the son of James C. and Alice Beatty Collins, and was born at Folsom, in Highland County, October 27, 1882. John attended Buckley School. For 43 years he was engaged in delivery service in Hillsboro, retiring January 29, 1954, from the employ of Swonger Dairy in this city. He went to work for James Burnett's livery stable in 1910; a few years later he was employed by McKeehan-Hiestand, wholesale grocers, following which he drove a feed delivery wagon for Whisler Grain and Feed. In 1915 John bought a wagon of his own and delivered kerosene for 10 years. In 1925 he went to work for Lon Chaney, delivering groceries for eight stores for a period of eight years. Trucks by this time were replacing horse and wagon delivery and he was employed by the Highland Dairy to deliver milk. In 1941 Herman Fairly organized the Hillsboro Dairy and John delivered milk for this dairy. He was employed by Swonger Dairy from 1947 until his retirement in 1954. It was estimated that he had delivered three million quarts of milk, though none ventured to guess the number of cigars he had smoked, during his delivery service. Through his many years of meeting the public, John had a tremendous acquaintance and hosts of friends. He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Ray McGlinchey, Mrs. Charles Ellison, Mrs. Margaret Hunter, Mrs. Mathew Crabtree all of of Hillsboro; three brothers, Starley and Sam of Hillsboro, and Ab of Greenfield, and several nephews and nieces. His wife, Laura Hetherington Collins, preceded him in death. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in charge of Rev. Father Albert Schreck, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery, under the direction of Evans funeral directors.
