The Rev. Arthur Swanson of Oakland was the officiating minister, and music was furnished by Mrs. Ivan Wedergren at the piano and Mrs. Fred Butler and Mrs. Margaret Buck. A large congregation of friends was assembled to pay a final tribute of respect to the departed pioneer, and there was a beautiful and profuse offering of flowers. The remains were then laid to rest in the Baptist God's Acre at Swaburg. Serving as pallbearers were Arthur Gustafson, Arthur Bowman, Lawrence Strand and Allan Anderson of Swaburg and Roy Larson and Harry Stromquist of Uehling. Wollmer & Warne were in charge of arrangements. Attending the services from a distance were Mrs. Anna Peterson, Mrs. Edwin Peterson, Mrs. Will Peterson and daughter and Mrs. Louis Adams of Omaha, Rev. and Mrs. Presley L. Robinson, Mrs. Mathilda Mattson and sons and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wittgow of Fremont, Mrs. Henry Niederdeppe and Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Blome of Herman. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Uehling Man Dies Monday Services Held Thursday For John Mattson, 78. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Uehling Congregational church for John Mattson, 78, long time resident of Swaburg, who died at his home in Uehling Monday evening. In failing health about three months, he had become seriously ill three weeks ago. Rev. Arthur Swanson of Oakland officiated at the services, held at the home at 1:30 and at the church at 2 p.m. Burial was made in the Baptist cemetery south of Uehling. Mr. Mattson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Matts Mattson, Swaburg pioneers, was the last surviving member of a family of Swedish settlers who aided in the building up of the Swaburg community. Born in Omaha Aug. 18, 1865, he came with his parents to Swaburg when he was five, the family homesteading on the farm where Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Westergren now reside. Indians, whose trails passed near his home roamed through this territory. For several years he served as clerk of Logan township and was treasurer of his school district for nine years. He was active in the work of the American Sunday School Union, and was superintendent of its Sunday school in Swaburg for 10 years. Mr. Mattson was married at Fremont to Miss Carrie Peterson of Swaburg March 11, 1889, and they observed their 55th wedding anniversary last spring. Following their marriage, they lived in Swaburg, where the elder son, Marvin, now lives. They returned from active farming 16 years ago and moved to Uehling to make their home. Surviving are his widow and five children, Mrs. J. E. Connor of Los Angeles, Calif.; Marvin, Swaburg; Josie, Uehling; Franklin, Long Beach, Calif., and Geneve, Uehling. He is also survived by six grandchildren, a niece and several nephews. Besides his parents, one brother and three sisters preceded him in death.
