Read More	Bluffton Chronicle Wells County, Indiana Wed., Feb 22, 1911 JOHN SOWARDS' INJURIES RESULTED IN DEATH Tocsin Man with Head Crushed in Machinery Never Regained Consciousness John McKinney Sowards, who was terribly injured in an accident at the Sowards sawmill at Tocsin Tuesday afternoon, passed away about 8:30 o'clock Tuesday night, without regaining consciousness. The surgeons who dressed his injuries late in the afternoon held forth absolutely no hope of recovery. There were no witnesses to the accident and the only explanation is that he fell into the machinery and was hurled against the fly wheel or some other solid mass. The force with which he was thrown was terrific as the skull was fractured at one of its thickest points, just at the edge of the hair in front. The fractur extended down through the temple to one of the eyes and across the skull to the back of the head, by means of cracks. At the point where the worst fractur occurred several large splinters of bone and pieces of Mr. Soward's cap were removed. His head was literally crushed.Mr. Sowards was born in Ohio on March 7, 1856, but has spent the most of his life near Tocsin. He was the son of John and Sarah Sowards, who came to this county before the war. John Sowards has been dead for some time but his widow, the mother of the victim of yesterday's accident, still lives and resides with her daughter, Mrs. William J. Gilliom (sic) near Tocsin. The aged mother, now 95 years of age, is in very feeble health.Mr. Sowards was married some thirty five years ago to Eve, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Wilkins. Mrs. Sowards preceded him in death, leaving to mourn with her husband, two children, William of Tocsin and Cressie, wife of Raymond Wasson, residing south of Tocsin.Mr. Sowards was married a second time to Miss Sarah Davidson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Davidson, residing one mile west of Tocsin. She survives him with five of their six children, as follows: Mrs. Eliza Campbell, of Peru and four sons, all at home - Seth, Geroge, cecil and Harry. One of the sons, George is visiting in Iowa, where he went last week. He has been summoned home and the funeral arrangements will be made in accordance with his movements.Mr. Sowards is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. William J. Gilliom; Mrs. Rosa Stevens, of Delmore, Ohio; Albert Sowards of Portage County; Ben Sowards, west of Tocsin; Williams Sowards of Tocsin and T. J. Sowards of Tocsin.
