The deceased is one of the successful farmers of that community and an exemplary citizen. At the time of his death, he was owner of some 200 acres of fine farm land. Besides his wife and a host of friends, he leaves nine children, all of whom are living and will be present at the funeral. The sons are Michael, Thomas and James. The daughters are (Bridget) Mrs. H.P. Coyle, (Mary) Mrs. G.E. Walsh, (Rose) Mrs. D.J. McLaughlin, (Katy) Mrs. Ed Toinby, (Annie) Mrs. Henry Cahill and (Maggie) Mrs. John Mullen. The funeral is set for Thursday at 10 o'clock. -------------------- Dougherty World Dougherty, Iowa Thursday, 17 November 1904 Page 1 JOHN McMENIMEN (1828-1904) John McMenimen, an old and most highly respected member of this community, and member of St. Patrick's Church passed away on Tuesday Morning at 8 o'clock November 15, 1904. Mr. McMenimen was born in County Donegal, Ireland, in April, 1828, being therefore 76 years and 7 months old at the time of his death. Fifty one years ago he came to America and settled in Hazleton, Penn. In 1866, at Hazleton, he was united in marriage to Miss Annie Shovlin, who with nine children is left to mourn his death. For ten years following his marriage, he lived in Pennsylvania, and in 1876 came to Iowa. Here, in Westfork Twp., Franklin County he purchased a homestead, and the following year settled with his family thereon, remaining on that place till his death. His children are Bridget, Mrs. Hugh Coyle and Annie, Mrs. Henry Cahill, of Cartersville, Mary, Mrs. George Walsh and Maggie, Mrs. John Mullen, Michael, Thomas and James of Dougherty. Besides these immediate members of the family are Mrs. James Kelly, Mrs. Thomas Sharp (Hannah), Mrs. James Gallagher (Bridget), Mrs. Dan O'Donnell and Mrs. Thomas Moran, sisters of the deceased. The funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Church this morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. P.D. O'Reilly celebrated requiem high mass, and in the sermon spoke of the supernatural virtues always evidenced in the admirable life of the departed. Mr. McMenimen's life was an inspiration to every honest man. As the father of a family, his good example shone always before his children, a burning and a shining light of virtue. From him they might learn the practice and the ways of honest simplicity, of integrity, righteous manliness, and true abiding faith. But it was especially in his capacity as a Catholic citizen, admidst times and circumstances that tried men's souls. Radicalism ran hot in the burning questions of politics and religion, and in those days with many to be right was to be adjudged guilty of a crime. But Mr. McMenimen never once wavered from his principles of fidelity to the God of his forefathers. With him, next to his love for God was his sense of justice and his love for all mankind. Meanness and trickery never elicited from him even a moral support, but he was always ready to champion the cause of righteousness. With thousands of his native countrymen, Mr. McMenimen lent an intelligent obedience to the laws of the commonwealth of his adopted home. He helped to build and protect the state with undivided and unswerving fidelity. With them he also built up a catholicity, a citizenship, and a family name that are heritages more precious than silver and gold, or anything else that this world can buy. At his passing, we stand as a community with unfeigned sorrow, for those of the old pioneers who have passed away and with deep respect and tenderest regard for those of them who yet remain. The name of John McMenimen was a synonym for honesty in this community these many years. Now that he is dead, we wonder not that men and women without distinction stand sorrowfully above his remains. Peace to his ashes. Laurels to his memory. Eternal rest and happiness to his soul.
