Description	:	According to the 1900 Federal Census, John emigrated from England shortly after his marriage in 1845. John's wife, Hannah, was cited as the mother of five children. One child died en route to the US. John and family followed the railroad to Stephenson Co., Illinois where John worked as head packer in a large packing house. After two years they moved nearby to Lena, Illinois where John and Hannah resided for the next 39 years. John was shown in West Point Twp., Stephenson Co., Illinois in the 1860 census under the name "John Millows", age 39, post office of Lena. He was with his wife, Hannah, age 39; daughter, A. M. age 14; son, Thos, age 11; and son, M. age 5. John served the Union Army in the Civil War for three years. At one time his regiment was captured and he with a number of other northern soldiers were confined at Libby prison where he experienced much hardship. Later, he was transferred with other prisoners to the infamous Andersonville prison, where he was confined for seven months before being restored his freedom. He has a pension file, dated from 1877, where it states that he was in Company J of the 14th Illinois Cavalry. In the 1870 census, John and his wife, whose name was spelled "Anna" were shown as residing in Lena in Stephenson Co., Illinois. John was a butcher, age stated as 41, his occupation was "butcher". Hannah's age was stated as 53. The 1880 Census places John and his wife in Kent Twp in Stephenson Co., Illinois. John is farming, and his age is listed as 58. both of his parents were from England. His last name, at first glance, looks to be spelled, "Mellours". Around the year 1895 (possibly 1892) John and Hannah moved to Iowa Falls in Hardin Co., Iowa where their two surviving sons were residing. Their only daughter remained in Stephenson County. According to the 1900 census In Iowa Falls, Hardin Co., Iowa," John Mellors" and his wife, Hannah, were residing at 106 River Street. John was younger than his wife by about 5 (8) years, his age said to be 75 at the time of the census. The couple had been married for 55 years, placing the year of marriage about 1845. Neither of the two were naturalized. According to John's death record he was a retired farmer. He died at the age of 87 years of old age. During, at least, his last nine weeks, John was in the care of Hulda C. Conrad, the wife of his grand daughter Mrs. Lettie Conrad's husband's brother, Harvey Conrad. She was later reimbursed for meals to Mark Mellows, John's son, for meals while at the bedside of his father (March 1st to March 6); board and lodging for Tom Mellows while at the bedside of John (Feb. 23 to March 8); and board and lodging for Mary Mattes also while at John's bedside (Feb. 28 to March 8). She was also reimbursed for help with preparing him for the funeral, and for bed clothes destroyed and ruined.
