The end of his long and useful life as a citizen of Atchison came peacefully as he was seated in a chair at his home, 903 North Seventh street. His health had been failing rapidly two weeks prior to his death, but he was still able to be up and about. Mr. Meyer had been a resident of Atchison and East Atchison, Mo., since coming up the river in a steamboat from St. Louis in 1869. He was the founder of the present Meyer bakery and grocery store, 901 North Seventh street, now managed by Mr. and Mrs. Ben Huey, in 1883, and had always been active in the growth of the town. John Meyer was a native of Germany. He was born in Bayreuth, Bavaria, April 4, 1847. At the age of 21 years he came to America alone, locating for short periods at Pittsburgh, Pa., and St. Louis, Mo., before settling in Atchison. Here he entered the employ of John Wittmeir, a baker, at Fifth and Kansas avenue. He later bought a bakery in East Atchison, operating it until the flood of the early 80's. He bought the North Seventh street bakery from the late John Wolf. Mr. Meyer married Miss Elizabeth Glattfelder here in 1874. After her death he married a younger sister of his first bride, Miss Margaret Glattfelder. Mrs. Meyer died three years ago. Surviving Mr. Meyer are: Two sons, Will Meyer of Kansas City, Mo., and Charles Meyer of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Eymann and Mrs. Ben Huey, both of Atchison; a brother Johan Meyer of Germany; 17 grandchildren and one great grandchild. A third son, John Meyer, died here some years ago. The funeral will be at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the home on North Seventh street. The Christian Science service will be used. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon cemetery. Six grandsons will be pallbearers: Wilbur Meyer, John Meyer, Robert Meyer, Arthur Eymann, jr., Ben Huey, jr., and Gerald Boling.
