Jan 26, 1949 - Carroll Daily Times - John M James, who had lived in Carroll county for 56 years and in Carroll for 24 years, succumbed to a heart ailment at St Anthony's hospital at 4:30 this morning. Mr James was almost 78 years old and had been ill at his home for 10 days before being taken to the hospital late yesterday afternoon. He had been in poor health for the last 2 1/2 years. Mr. James, son of Richard and Sarah James, was born November 13, 1870, in London, England. He was educated in the London public schools. He delighted in telling his friends about his home country in England, punctuating his descriptive accounts with songs and recitations. Mr. James enjoyed traveling. He took one trip to the United States before coming to this country to make his home. He also made several voyages with his uncle, Captain Harry Miller. He and his daughter, Mrs. J. Howard Hodges (Mabel), were in London in 1926. In 1893 Mr. James came from London to live in Carroll county. He farmed near Templeton before moving to Dedham, where he worked for the Loxterkamp & Stallman garage. After locating in Carroll, he was employed at the L.C. Wright Furniture store, which occupied the building now housing the Carroll theatre. He has been retired for a number of years. He had many hobbies, two of which were the collecting of miniatures were of several varieties, including animals and pictures. Mr. James was married to Edith Morgan at Carroll March 25, 1903. The family home is at 909 North Carroll street. Surviving with his wife are two daughters and one son, Mrs. Leon Thorne (Rena), Sheldahl; Mrs. Hodges (Mabel), Carroll; and Gurney James, at home. He also leaves seven grandchildren; a stepsister, Lily; and three step brothers, William, George and Richard, London, England. A son, William; brother Harry; and two sisters, Janey and Annie, preceded him in death. Mr. James belonged to the Methodist church and Carroll Lodge No. 279, I.O.O.F. Mr. and Mrs. James daughter, Mrs. Thorne, has been at the family home since Sunday.
