M. Bryan The venerable John Mills died last night at twelve o'clock at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. A. M. Bryan, two miles east of Jamestown. Mr. John Mills was born in Maron, now Fleming County, Kentucky in 1794. In April of the year 1796 his father, Mr. Jacob Mills, in company with John Wilson and his three sons, Daniel, George and Amos, emigrated to what was then the North-western Territory, settling in what is now the south-west corner of Greene County. Mr. Mills has probably been in and about Greene County longer than any man now living. His mental faculties and physical vigor were remark- ably preserved for one at his advanced age. At the age of fifteen he removed with his father from Warren to Greene Coun- ty, again settling in the woods near Clif- ton. Here the father and his three sons Jacob, Daniel and Thomas went to work and cleared a farm enduring the exposure and hardships attendant upon such a life with patience and cheerfulness. They were often in company with Indians who inhabited the county or came here on hunting excursions. Mr. Mills was married in 1816 at Clif- ton to Miss Elizabeth Stevenson, the daughter of William Stevenson, a Ken- tuckian who was a cousin to the father of Col. Stevenson. Twelve children were born to them, three dying in infan- cy, the remaining nine are still living, among them, the youngest of the family, is Mrs. T. J. Lucas of this city. In 1820 he removed his family consist- ing then of his wife and three children to some land he had bought in Fayette County, just over the line from Greene. He lived on this farm fifty-five years. His wife died in 1875 at the age of 81 years. In conversation with a GAZETTE re- porter at one time, Mr. Mills remarked in speaking of the times being hard. "Men talk about times being hard now, but they don't know anything about it. In the early days the very highest price paid for labor was from fifty to seventy- five cents per day, and could not be ob- tained at that by a great many, while everything you bought was from ten to twenty times higher than it is now." The material of the shirt Mr. Mills was married in cost one dollar per yard and was not nearly so fine as the one he had on when in converstion with the GA- ZETTE scribe, the material of which cost nine cents per yard. After the death of his wife Mr. Mills sold his farm, and was worth at that time $25,000. He then removed to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bryan, where he lived happily until his death.
