Description	:	JOHN MILTON DEHART. John Milton DeHart, son of Eli and Hannah DeHart, was born in Hancock county, Illinois, May 20, 1841. His parents returned to Van Buren county, Iowa, (then the Territory of Iowa), and to their farm near Vernon, in 1844, where Milton with his five brothers and two sisters grew to manhood and womanhood. John Milton DeHart, son of Eli and Hannah DeHart, was born in Hancock county, Illinois, May 20, 1841. His parents returned to Van Buren county, Iowa, (then the Territory of Iowa), and to their farm near Vernon, in 1844, where Milton with his five brothers and two sisters grew to manhood and womanhood. He died at his home in Milton, September 14, 1910, being at the time of his death 69 years, 4 months and 24 days old. August 9, 1861, he enlisted in Co. H., Seventh Missouri Cavalry, and was honorably discharged in October, 1864. Almost all his term of enlistment was spent in fighting the bushwackers (as one of his comrades expressed it) in Missouri and Arkansas. On September 11, 1866, he was married to Margaret Campbell and to this union were born six children, four girls and two boys. One boy and two girls, along with the father, have answered to the last roll call, while the wife one son, Otto Dell, and two daughters, Lula Bell and Georgia May, are left to mourn the love of a kind husband and father. In addition to these, he leaves three brothers, George, Will and Tom, with numerous other relatives and friends. He was a charter member of the Christian church at Cantril but later transferred his membership to the Christian church at Milton. His death removes another Van Buren county's old settlers, and one of our most exemplary citizens. He had lived in this county for about 66 years and the name Milton DeHart was a synonym among his neighbors for truth, probity and uprightness-in short all that goes to make a first-class Christian citizen, a neighborly neighbor, a kind, considerate, loving husband and father. He was the kind of a man that is sadly missed in a community and his place is not easily filled. Funeral services were conducted by Eld. P.D. Holloway at the Christian church at Milton on Thursday, Sept. 15, 1910, and the burial was in the Milton cemetery. The following nephews acted as pallbearers: Albert and George Davis, James Hanen and Sherman, Marion and Walter DeHart. Source: Van Buren Co.
